How to Care for Gold-Plated Gemstone Jewelry

Handmade jewelry is meant to be worn — and with a few simple habits, your gold-plated gemstone pieces will stay beautiful for years. Every piece we make combines an 18k gold or sterling silver plating over nickel-free brass with natural, often raw gemstones. Both parts appreciate a little care.

The golden rule: last on, first off

Put your jewelry on after perfume, lotion, and makeup — and take it off before showering, swimming, or exercising. Water, chlorine, salt, and cosmetics are the main things that wear down gold plating over time.

What to avoid

Keep your pieces away from water, pools, and the ocean; perfumes, lotions, and household chemicals; and prolonged direct sunlight, which can affect some natural stones. Raw gemstones like turquoise, larimar, and opal are porous by nature — part of their beauty — so they absorb whatever touches them.

How to store your jewelry

Store each piece in a dry place, ideally in the pouch or box it arrived in. Our branded gift boxes are designed for exactly this — they keep pieces separated so stones don't scratch each other and plating doesn't rub. If you live in a humid climate, a small silica packet in your jewelry box works wonders.

How to clean it

A gentle wipe with a soft, dry cloth after wearing is all you need. Avoid jewelry dips, ultrasonic cleaners, and abrasive cloths — they are made for solid gold and can strip plating or damage raw stones.

Caring for specific stones

Pearls and coral are organic and the most delicate — keep them away from all chemicals. Turquoise and larimar can slowly change tone if soaked in oils or lotions. Druzy and raw crystals hold tiny sparkling surfaces; rinse-free care (dry cloth only) keeps them bright.
